October is here and with it comes the much-anticipated Homecoming Season! There’s honestly nothing like the spirit and energy of Homecoming at an HBCU. Whether it's an electrifying performance of the award winning Sonic Boom marching band at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) or the unforgettable memories made at "The Greatest Homecoming on Earth” at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University (NC A&T), Homecoming is a time for students and alumni alike to come together and celebrate their legacy.
This year, however, one HBCU stands out with even more reason to celebrate: 2024 marks the centennial of Howard University’s Homecoming! That’s 100 years of football and festivities. But Howard’s Homecoming hasn’t always been the week-long extravaganza we know today. From its humble beginnings, Howard University has tirelessly cultivated a legacy steeped in culture and community—showcasing the strength of its students and alumni through the Homecoming game and beyond. Let’s look at the rich history of Howard University Homecoming and how it has evolved over the years.

The Beginning
In 1919, the seeds for a Homecoming celebration were planted as both Howard University and Lincoln University recognized the concept being embraced by other universities. The idea was timely, coinciding with the Harlem Renaissance, otherwise known as “The New Negro Movement," which encouraged Black people to build community and embrace cultural pride. It was during then that Howard decided to invite its alumni back to campus, creating a far reaching reunion that would soon evolve into the Homecoming we celebrate today.
As the first Homecoming approached, the excitement was palpable. In an article published in the Hilltop by Emory B. Smith (’14, JD ’19), it was revealed that Howard was ready to roll out the red carpet for its alumni with a three-day reunion filled with events, including a reception in the dining hall and a special ceremony honoring former HU football players. Howard University's first Homecoming took place on November 27, 1924. The occasion was simple, yet monumental: a Thanksgiving football game against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Despite a disappointing score of 31-0 in favor of Lincoln, this first event marked the beginning of a cherished tradition that continues still today. It laid the groundwork for what would become an annual tradition that continues to thrive.

Expansion of Events
Fast forward a few decades and Homecoming was beginning to transform into a vibrant celebration that blended football with other cultural festivities. The celebration began to expand from a single game day event to a multiday jubilee. By the 1950s and 1960s, Homecoming had evolved into a series of events that celebrated not only the athletic abilities of the Bison but also the cultural of the university and surrounding community. Events like the Homecoming Pageant and various alumni receptions were introduced, allowing for more opportunities for alumni and students to connect. The Homecoming Parade became a staple, showcasing student organizations, Greek life, and community involvement. By this time, it was clear that Homecoming was no longer just about the game; it was a time for alumni to reconnect with their roots, share stories, and celebrate the achievements of Howard University. Now, events such as the call to chapel, the step show, fashion show and Yardfest are all Howard University staples that we cannot go without.
HU Homecoming: A Star-Studded Affair
The Homecoming celebrations of the 1970s marked a turning point, as Howard became known for attracting high-profile performers and guests. Notable artists such as Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder graced the stage, making Homecoming not just a local affair but a national event. The Howard University Yard became a hub of music, dance, and unity, drawing alumni and friends from across the country.
By the 1980s and 1990s, Homecoming had truly become a week-long celebration. The addition of events like Yardfest—featuring performances by artists such as the late Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Lil Uzi Vert—transformed Homecoming into a cultural phenomenon. This era also saw an increase in attendance, with reports indicating that upwards of 100,000 people attended festivities during Homecoming Week.
