Collection: Hampton Pirates

Hampton University’s beginnings can be traced back to Mary S. Peake, who in 1861 began teaching freedmen in outdoor classes beneath what is now the iconic Emancipation Oak. In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to a gathering under that very tree, marking a powerful moment of change. In 1868, it was originally established as the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute.
